Medicare Supplement
A Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) sits next to Original Medicare and pays your share of Part A and B costs. Use any doctor that accepts Medicare. No networks. No referrals.
The 2 Most Popular Plans: G and N
Plans are standardized nationwide — Plan G from one carrier covers the same as Plan G from any other. You're shopping price and rate-increase history, not benefits.
Plan G — Most Comprehensive
- You pay only the $283 Part B deductible once per year
- After that, Medicare + Plan G pay 100% of approved costs
- Part A deductible: 100% covered
- Part B coinsurance: 100% covered
- Skilled nursing coinsurance: 100% covered
- Part B excess charges: covered
- Foreign travel emergency: 80% covered
- Best for people with frequent care or complex health needs
Plan N — Lower Premium Option
- About $30/mo less than Plan G
- Same as Plan G except: $20 copay per doctor visit, $50 ER if not admitted
- Does NOT cover Part B excess charges
- Note: 8 states ban excess charges anyway (PA, OH, NY, MA, MN, RI, VT, CT) — Plan N is excellent in those
- Best for people who use care less often
Choosing the Right Supplement Carrier
Same plan, different price. Here's what we actually look at.
Rate Increase History
Plans cheap today can raise 10%+ annually. We compare track records over many years, not just today's rate.
Financial Strength
We only recommend carriers with strong AM Best ratings (A or above). Your plan needs to be there when you need it.
Household Discounts
Many carriers offer 5–10% discounts when a spouse or household member is also insured. We always check.
Right Enrollment Timing
Your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment starts when you turn 65 AND have Part B. This is your guaranteed-issue window. After it, underwriting applies.
